Memento mori jewellery was very popular in the Victorian period. They were worn in remembrance if a lost loved one, and indicated to others that they were in a period of mourning.
These were made popular by Queen Victoria who remained in black mourning for the last 40 years of her life, following the death of Prince Albert.
This pendant was cast from a mourning pendant that I have in my own personal collection.
The hand is holding a rose. In the Victorian language of flowers a red rose means 'I love you' and a deep dark crimson rose means ' mourning.
So this pendant would be appropriate for a lost love.
The pointing hand symbolises the hope of heaven. The index finger pointing down represents God reaching down for the soul.
This pendant is made of solid sterling silver. It is flat backed, and stamped with .925 and ‘swalk’.
The pendant was oxidized and hand polished to highlight the details and give he pendant a vintage feel.
This pendant measures approx. 44 mm including the bail (these are handmade and may vary slightly).

You pendant will come wrapped in tissue in a small cotton draw string bag, which is also great for storing the piece when not in use.
