This is a sterling silver cast of an Antique Wax Seal from circa 1780. It features the image of the famous Roman colosseum.
The letter seal used to make this pendant would have been bought as a souvenir during what was known as the ‘grand tour’
The grand tour was the 17th and 18th century custom of a traditional trip through Europe undertaken by the upper class young men and woman of sufficient means and rank, when they had come of age (about 21).
The primary value of the Grand tour lay in its exposure to the cultural legacy of classical antiquity and the Renaissance.
This seal would have been purchase during one of these tours and brought back to Britain as a gift or memento.
The pendant was cast in 100% sterling silver and has a nice weight for it's size. It has been oxidized to highlight the details in the antique design and hand polished for a aged patina.
This seal pendant measures approx 22 mm across its diameter. This can vary slightly however as each piece is made to order by hand.

Wax Seal Jewelry......
Each piece offered for sale is an imprint or cast of an antique wax seal from my personal collection. I use 100% sterling silver as this has the strength and durability needed for a piece of jewelry that is to be worn for years. All the jumps rings, clasps etc, are also sterling silver and each part is soldered, also for strength and durability. My intention is to make a piece that could become an heirloom too and for it to last generations.
Each piece is individually handmade and therefore no two pieces will be exactly the same, they will however be extremely similar. The mark of the maker has been purposely left on the casts. The signs of age, cracks and tool marks all add to the charm of the piece and are an intentional feature.
