Merry Christmas..... Victorian Christmas antique was seal necklace.
Christmas as we know it owes a lot to the Victorians. Before Queen Victoria's reign began in 1837 nobody had heard of Santa Claus or Christmas crackers. No Christmas cards were sent and most people did not have holidays from work. The wealth go the industrial revolution in the Victorian era changed the face of Christmas forever.
Famous authors like Charles Dickens wrote books like 'A Christmas Carol' (published in 1843), Christmas cards became popular due to the new 'penny post' (1840) and Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert brought the tradition of the Christmas tree over from his native Germany, among many other new traditions that we take for granted today (turkey dinner, Christmas carols, and stockings filled with goodies).
and so this little seal became part of the new Victorian Christmas Celebrations. Letters to far away loved ones, and Happy greeting cards would have been sealed with this holiday stamp and the text and holly imagery are quintessentially Victorian.
Made from solid sterling silver I used this letter seal to create this sterling silver handmade pendant. It was oxidised to highlight the lettering and the holly leaves and then hand polished to a mellow gleam.
size......
This wax seal pendant charm measures 24mm across the middle and has a nice solid weight for its size.

Wax Seal Jewelry......
Each piece offered for sale is an imprint or cast of an antique wax seal from my personal collection. I use 100% sterling silver as this has the strength and durability needed for a piece of jewelry that is to be worn for years. All the jumps rings, clasps etc, are also sterling silver and each part is soldered, also for strength and durability. My intention is to make a piece that could become an heirloom too and for it to last generations.
Each piece is individually handmade and therefore no two pieces will be exactly the same, they will however be extremely similar. The mark of the maker has been purposely left on the casts. The signs of age, cracks and tool marks all add to the charm of the piece and are an intentional feature.
