This pendant was cast from an antique wax seal stamp from the 1800's. These were used to seal letters and correspondence and come is a huge variety of designs, mottos, sentiments, heraldry and proverbs...
This beautiful antique seal features a flying bird, with an olive branch in his beak. It has the French words 'La Paix' across the top of it, which translate to 'Peace' in English'. The olive branch has long been used as a symbol of Peace and the poet Virgil (70-100 B.C.) wrote about it in his Aeneid....
"High on the stern Aeneas his stand,
And held a branch of olive in his hand,
While thus he spoke: "The Phrygians' arms you see,
Expelled from Troy, provoked in Italy
By Latian foes, with war unjustly made;
At first affianced, and at last betrayed.
This message bear: The Trojans and their chief
Bring holy peace, and beg the king's relief."
The early Christians often allegorised peace on their sepulchres by the figure of a dove bearing an olive branch in its beak......
It is a beautiful simple seal with a strong message........

Wax Seal Jewelry......
Each piece offered for sale is an imprint or cast of an antique wax seal from my personal collection. I use 100% sterling silver as this has the strength and durability needed for a piece of jewelry that is to be worn for years. All the jumps rings, clasps etc, are also sterling silver and each part is soldered, also for strength and durability. My intention is to make a piece that could become an heirloom too and for it to last generations.
Each piece is individually handmade and therefore no two pieces will be exactly the same, they will however be extremely similar. The mark of the maker has been purposely left on the casts. The signs of age, cracks and tool marks all add to the charm of the piece and are an intentional feature.
