ERATO... one of the nine Greek muses.

Goddess of Music, dancing and song.

This pendant was cast from an antique wax seal stamp from the 1800's. These were used to seal letters and correspondence and come in a huge variety of designs.

This seal features the image of Erato, Goddess of music, song and dance. One of the nine Greek muses. The name Erato means 'desired or 'lovely. She is always pictured and represented by a lyre.

Tassie seals were glass seals made by sculptor and gem engraver James Tassie (1735-1799). And were very popular during the 18th century. The subject matter of the paste glass seals ranged from portraits, copies of ancient works to contempory imagery.

All of Tassie's seals are catalogued in his book 'a descriptive catalogue of a collection of ancient and modern engraved grams, cameos and intaglios, taken from the most celebrated cabinets in Europe; and cast in coloured pastes, white enamel and sulphur'

This seal measures 28mm long including bail and 18mm across. This may vary slightly as each seal is made individually by hand.....

Wax Seal Jewelry......

Each piece offered for sale is an imprint or cast of an antique wax seal from my personal collection. I use 100% sterling silver as this has the strength and durability needed for a piece of jewelry that is to be worn for years. All the jumps rings, clasps etc, are also sterling silver and each part is soldered, also for strength and durability. My intention is to make a piece that could become an heirloom too and for it to last generations.

Each piece is individually handmade and therefore no two pieces will be exactly the same, they will however be extremely similar. The mark of the maker has been purposely left on the casts. The signs of age, cracks and tool marks all add to the charm of the piece and are an intentional feature.
