Memento mori jewellery was very popular in the Victorian period. They were worn in remembrance if a lost loved one, and indicated to others that they were in a period of mourning.
These were made popular by Queen Victoria who remained in black mourning for the last 40years of her life, following the death of Prince Albert.
This pendant was cast from a mourning seal that I have in my own personal collection.
This seal features the universal symbol of death and rebirth... a skull and bones. The seal has the date 1835 on it. This is 184 years old and still gives a night crisp impression. The banner on the top states 'memento mori'.
And the bottom banner states 'tempus fugit' which is Latin for 'time flies'.
This pendant is made of solid sterling silver. It is flat backed, and stamped with .925 and ‘swalk’.
The pendant was oxidized and hand polished to highlight the details and give he pendant a vintage feel.
This pendant measures approx. 38mm including the bail (these are handmade and may vary slightly).

Your pendant will come wrapped in tissue in a small cotton draw string bag, which is also great for storing the piece when not in use.
