Victorian Sterling silver Mourning hand with Sheaf of Wheat.
The pendant was cast in 100% sterling silver and is enormous! Its the biggest piece in the shop and it really does make a statement. This pendant weighs 35grams and measures 75mm including the bail ring.
I used a mourning brooch that I have in my own personal collection. It features a hand that is pointing downwards and holding a sheaf of wheat. I used the ancient art of casting to create this replica for you.
Faithfullly re-producing every minute detail in this lovely victorian jewel.
The pendant is full of symbology. The hand pointing downwards represents the hand of God watching from above and sending down his blessings. The sheaf of wheat represents the harvest. That in death you reap what you sow and that in the afterlife you get your just rewards. Just like the farmer harvesting the wheat at the end of the season; if your life had been good and productive you will get your just rewards too....
This pendant is made from solid sterling silver and is not plated in any way. I used liver of sulphur to blacken the silver and then polished it back by hand to leave the patina in the deeper crevices. This highlights the details and gives it a beautiful mellow feel.
This victorian mourning hand weighs 35 grams... that is very heavy. It is solid sterling silver. It measures 75mm in length including the bail ring. it is 29mm at its widest part.
